Frequently asked questions
- Why do you only take commercially bred animals?
- Sri Lanka has many rescues focused mainly on street and local-breed animals. Commercially bred rescues are fewer, but their cases often require far more time, funding and specialised rehabilitation due to inbreeding and overexploitation. Tails of Freedom was designed to fill the gap around pet shops, bad breeding, puppy mills and breeding-related legislation, while dividing the work so that more animals can receive appropriate help.
- Why can’t I surrender my healthy pet or get my pet adopted through you?
- Adoptions are currently limited while many families are leaving the country without their pets. Taking on private rehoming cases would overcrowd rescue capacity and reduce the space and funding available for animals in greatest need. Create a poster with a clear photo, vaccination and sterilisation status, temperament details and your own contact number. Tails of Freedom may be able to share the post for visibility. Sterilising the animal before adoption helps protect their future welfare.
- Do you spay or neuter animals before adoption?
- Yes. Rescue animals are sterilised before adoption whenever medically appropriate. In rare cases, an animal may be too young, old or unwell for surgery. Those animals are placed only in homes or sanctuaries where they will never be exploited or used for breeding.
- How can I get involved in fundraising events or campaigns?
- Tails of Freedom regularly needs ad-hoc volunteers to organise and run fundraisers and other activities. Join the volunteer database through the Get Involved page. If you can make a consistent commitment and would like to join the core team, email info@tailsoffreedom.org with a short explanation and a copy of your CV.
